The third Earl of Douglas, called Archibald the Grim, built the castle atop a timber fortification in 1370. His ‘reign’ is marked by heavy oppression but his castle has stood the test of time. The tower, which is cold and imposing, hides a surprisingly complex and elaborate interior, one that draws flock of tourists each year.

Perhaps the castle has stood for as long as it has because of its simple design. Each of its five stories was designed for a specific purpose. The basement housed a working well, the dungeon and a rudimentary drain system. Next was the kitchen floor, complete with latrines, staff areas and a central fireplace. The great Hall was a floor above the kitchen floor, allowing the servants easy access. The family would have lived on the fourth floor while servants and poor relations resided on the fifth.

The castle remained in control of the Douglass’s for years to come in spite of ongoing fights with Scottish royalty. It wasn’t until the mid 1400’s that the castle met its final fate. A terrible fire rained upon the castle and laid it to ruins. It was used for a time to house prisoners and today its tower, which still stands in ruinous glory, is home to beautiful gardens. It will likely remain a favorite tourist spot for years to come.
